PICO AND SEPULVEDA CONTEST ENTRIES 1973: This is not a radio show, but something special. In 1973 the Doc held a contest, inviting listeners to produce and tape new versions of his theme song. Thirty-four entries were submitted, including newly-composed songs as well as various arrangements of the original song. Dr. Demento, with the help of Captain Chaos and Jungle Judy, picked a grand prize winner along with nine runners-up. This post contains all 34 entries. They are heard in the random order in which Dr. Demento and his friends opened the packages and played the tapes. You can have fun second-guessing Dr. D and picking your own winner! No Dr. D announcements are heard; to repeat, this is not a radio show.
Truth in advertising department: One entry in this contest is not here. That is an entry on which a very young Alfred Yankovic played backup accordion. He remembers making the tape and submitting the entry. (This was 1973, when Al would have been 13 years old). We suspect that it was lost in the mail, or perhaps arrived too late for the deadline. It was definitely not among the entries judged by Dr. Demento that evening. The search continues. Another accordion player was, however, among the entrants that you will hear.
Another non-winning entry, which you will also hear, is by several members of a group that would, soon after this contest, make more music that became very familiar to Dr. D listeners: the Roto Rooter Goodtime Christmas Band. Apr 9, 1973 [ Play List ] (Added May 29, 2011) |
