Dr. Demento Live in Portland, OR - January 2015

Once again, Dr. Demento will be appearing live on the Reed College campus. All events begin at 8 PM in the Vollum Lecture Hall, near the center of the campus in southeast Portland. Enter from Woodstock Blvd. Admission is $5 (free for Reed students, staff and alumni).

Thursday, January 22 - FROM JOE HILL TO MICHAEL BROWN: A CENTURY OF PROTEST SONG
From the World War I years up to today, people protesting war, racism, economic inequality and other injustices have used songs to spread their message and rally the troops. We’ll hear troubadours of the 1960s like Seeger, Dylan and Ochs, but also protest songs from many other times, from World War I to today, in a variety of genres from art song to punk.

Friday, January 23 - FROM RAGTIME TO RAP IN AN HOUR AND A QUARTER
Along with hosting the Dr. Demento Show, Barry Hansen (Reed ‘63) has been an inveterate collector and student of many kinds of music since childhood. He will take us on a whirlwind trip through the hit sounds of the Jazz Age, the Swing Era, the rock revolution and the birth of hip-hop. He’ll show how each movement led to the next, and the one great trend that unifies them all.

Saturday, January 24 - LIFE OF DEMENTO
Dr. Demento retraces his life as a radio outlier, from his very first broadcasts at Reed’s own KRRC to his continuing adventures in cyberspace. He’ll talk about his on-air encounters with George Carlin, Frank Zappa, “Weird Al” Yankovic and many more, his days as a roadie and record producer in the 1960s, and his upcoming movie. Many audio and video examples. He will be happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures afterward.
